Overview

Liposuction is the removal of fatty tissue from certain areas of the body which are resistant to the benefits of a healthy diet and regular exercise. It is a method of fat reduction that has become extremely popular and successful. The end result is an improvement to the contours of the body, the removal of unwanted bulges and is suitable for both men and women.

Procedure

The surgeon inserts a cannula, (a slender hollow tube), through a small incision by repeated movement, and with the use of saline solution and local anaesthetic, fat cells are broken down and removed by vacuum suction through the tube. Incisions are small and only one is needed usually for each area treated. For one area, such as the hips, the procedure can be carried out comfortably using local anaesthesia. If several areas are being sculptured general anaesthesia may be required. The length of the operation depends on the number of areas to be treated. Best results occur around the neck, thighs, abdomen and hips, but improvement can be made to the waist, upper arm and buttocks. Liposuction is not an overall treatment for obesity. Where fat cells have been removed fat can never reappear in these areas. However, excessive eating and lack of exercise will cause increase of weight and fatty bulges in other areas of the body.

Recovery

After the operation, there is some numbness in areas that have been treated. There will be some discomfort and pain for a few days. Anti-inflammatory medication and painkillers will be prescribed where appropriate. An overnight stay in hospital is recommended when a general anaesthesia is required. There will be some oozing for the first two days. This is normal as there are no stitches. Simply apply some pressure to the site for 5/10 minutes. Your support garment should be worn continuously for the first two weeks after your operation. After two weeks, continue to wear support garment during the day only for a further four weeks.
